The Incredible Story of Blackmore Chiyotake Y377

Blackmore Chiyotake Y377 is a prolific dam of bulls that have returned to our breeding program.

She is sired by Itozurudoi TF151, her dam is Blackmore Chiyotake W034 sired by Itoshigenami TF148, her grand-dam is Takeda U542, sired by Itoshigefuji TF147, her great grand-dam is sired by Itohana 2 and the foundation cow exported from Japan by Takeda Farms is Chiyotake 8A, sired by Itomichi.

For us this was the perfect stack of sires that produce big, strong, robust breeders with deep heart room, great spring and angle of rib to give a strong constitution with the cow to produce ample milk and to calve annually. To add to this, the Chiyotake cows have a wide thurl and correct setting allowing for calving ease, good feet and legs, correct hip and pin setting, ensuring a strong loin.

Blackmore Chiyotake Y377 has one of the highest GEBV for our breeding cows.

Additional Information

We have collected 445 straws of unlicensed semen from Blackmore Reliable R528 for our own herd use. We have established pregnancies on-farm which are due to calve on April 10th 2022.

Kikutsurudoi TF146 has a semen quality problem that we have found can be inherited through his sons but not through his daughters or their sons. The semen looks viable under a microscope but fails to make pregnancies. The only way you can be sure that his sons haven't inherited the same problem is to collect their semen, then use it on farm to establish pregnancies which we have done.

Years ago, we had Professor Paul Batt (a pioneer in IVF) look at the semen and my very unscientific explanation is that the sperm broke its neck as it attempted to pass through the zona of the ova.

We were Mr Takeda's agent in Australia and were aware that no fertilisation of ova had occurred in collections done at Trans Ova in the US. Then out of nowhere, we got some fertilized embryos.

This is where our foundation cows Aizakura U100 and ltochiyo U177 came from. We kept all the 146 embryos for ourselves.

We then found out which semen batch number created this fertilization and purchased and imported all the semen in that batch.

It is possible to get a pregnancy from semen, not in this batch, but I (David Blackmore) would estimate that it gives less than a 5% pregnancy rate, and then there is no guarantee that the male progeny will produce viable semen.

The above would explain why there is so few progeny registered with the Australian Wagyu Association, with about half registered by Blackmore Wagyu.

This emphasises Blackmore Reliable R528, as a rare and hard to get foundation bloodline, with his sire Kikutsurudoi TF146 being 100% Tajima born in the Hyogo Prefecture.

You may have noticed on the Blackmore Wagyu Beef logo, a nose print. It is Kikutsurudoi TF146's nose print emphasizing the importance of his bloodline to our breeding program.
